I feel your pain about the jazz clubs. The Village is still a great spot to find the hole-in-the-walls you mentioned in NYC. Did you have a chance to visit La Lanterna or Iridium? Guitarist Allan Holdsworth is playing Iridium this weekend, and he's about as far from Kenny G. as you can get, lol.

Lanterna was actually one of the places i happened to stumble into and enjoy. cool scene. I'll have to look into this holdsworth thing, that guys is for real... I actually have an old recording of him and tony williams that is unreal. thanks for the tip.

I definitely know what you mean. What is with this "soft jazz" stuff these days? I want to hear, and the only thing I could think is what a disgrace it is to jazz everywhere. What happened to all the happy stuff?

Ian, I'm with you all the way on the sad fate of these clubs. It's a worldwide phenomenon, too; just read an article on how the jazz clubs of Paris are folding. Might it have something to do with the homogenization of the music, how it's in every Starbucks and luxury car commercial? Jazz, I'm afraid, has become the Muzak of the Baby Boomer generation, their musical wallpaper.
